Credit Cards Are Not Evil

When times get tough we all start looking for someone to blame. It is almost impossible for us to admit we made bad decision and bought things we couldn't afford to. So we blame the companies that lent us the money, they want their money back and are charging through the wazoo if they don't get it.

It is easy to blame the big companies, they are making millions while many of us are losing our houses. But is it really right to blame them? No one made you sign that form to get yet another credit card. Sure they need to make it a bit more difficult to get access to money but how can it be their fault that you bought shoes?

No one ever likes to talk about personal responsibility, but that is the truth of the matter. We are living in a "I want" society and when it all blew up in our faces we need someone to blame. The person who is partly to blame is looking at you from the mirror every morning but that is the last person any of us want to blame.

Credit cards are in animate objects and as such they can't get themselves out of our wallets and throw themselves into the shops till. We have to actually reach in and get them out and then hand them over. Sure there are instances where people are putting their weekly food and baby diapers on their cards but far too many of us are using credit as a way to buy things we can't really afford and don't really need.

While I don't think credit card companies are in business for your benefit they also don't force you to buy things which usually you can live without. Before you use the credit card think about how much that $100 purchase will cost you if you don't pay it back when you get the first bill in.

A friend of mine explained the way she kept her useage of credit cards under control was to freeze them in a block of ice. She could still get to them in a real emergency but since she never wanted to carry a block of ice with her when she went shopping she was never tempted to use credit to buy anything.
